TMJ Treatment

Relief for jaw pain, clicking and temporomandibular dysfunction.

Back to all services

The temporomandibular joint works every time you eat, speak or yawn, so when it becomes painful there is no way to rest it. Patients come to our Hurghada clinic with clicking, jaw fatigue while chewing, or an inability to open the mouth fully, frequently alongside night-time clenching. Physiotherapy addresses the muscular and joint components, and we coordinate with your dentist when a splint or dental issue forms part of the picture.

How the jaw is assessed and treated

We measure maximum mouth opening in millimetres, observe whether the jaw deviates to one side as it opens, and palpate the joint and the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles for tenderness. Cervical posture is included, since the upper neck refers pain to the jaw. Treatment involves intra-oral and external soft-tissue release performed with gloves, gentle joint mobilisation, controlled opening exercises against a mirror, and upper cervical work. Appointments last 30 to 40 minutes, with clenching and daytime posture habits reviewed each visit.

Jaw symptoms we treat

  • Clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
  • Jaw fatigue or pain while chewing firmer foods
  • Restricted opening, or the jaw deviating to one side
  • Morning jaw tightness linked to night-time clenching
  • Facial or temple pain with no dental cause found

Benefits of jaw physiotherapy

  • Mouth opening measured in millimetres and tracked

  • Correction of the deviation pattern during opening
  • Upper neck contribution treated alongside the jaw
  • Practical strategies to interrupt daytime clenching

Session length and expected course

Sessions last 30 to 40 minutes. Most jaw cases are seen weekly for four to six sessions, with home exercises performed in short daily bouts between visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy help jaw clicking?

Physiotherapy addresses the muscular and joint contributions to clicking by treating the chewing muscles, mobilising the joint and retraining a controlled opening path. Not every click disappears, but symptoms and function usually improve.

Do you work inside the mouth?

Some techniques are intra-oral and performed with medical gloves to reach the deep pterygoid and masseter fibres. They are always explained first and only used with your consent.

Should I see a dentist as well?

If night grinding, a bite problem or a dental cause is suspected, we coordinate with your dentist, since a splint alongside physiotherapy often serves the patient better than either alone.
