Disc Herniation Treatment

Non-surgical management of herniated and bulging discs to relieve pressure on spinal nerves.

Back to all services

When part of a spinal disc displaces and presses against a nerve root, the resulting pain, numbness or weakness is felt along the path of that nerve rather than in the back alone. Most herniations we manage in Hurghada respond to conservative care, and surgery is reserved for progressive neurological loss. Treatment aims to reduce the pressure on the root, calm the inflamed tissue and rebuild the support around the affected level.

Conservative management step by step

We correlate your MRI report with a physical examination: dermatome mapping, myotome strength grading, reflex testing and repeated-movement testing to establish whether extension or flexion centralises your symptoms. Treatment starts with computer-controlled decompression at the involved level, positional relief and TECAR therapy for the surrounding spasm. As nerve irritation calms we add neural gliding, then deep abdominal and multifidus training, and finally hinge and lifting mechanics. Sessions last 45 to 50 minutes and neurological signs are rechecked at every visit.

Features of a herniated disc

  • Pain radiating into a specific arm or leg pattern
  • Numbness or tingling in a defined patch of skin
  • Weakness in a particular movement such as heel or toe raise
  • Symptoms aggravated by sitting, coughing or straining
  • Relief when lying in one particular position

Aims of non-surgical treatment

  • Pressure reduced at the specific herniated level
  • Neurological status monitored at every appointment
  • Symptoms tracked as they centralise toward the spine
  • Deep spinal stabilisers rebuilt to protect the segment
  • Safe bending and lifting mechanics taught before discharge

Session length and expected course

Sessions last 45 to 50 minutes, twice weekly at the start. Conservative programmes usually run 10 to 16 sessions over six to eight weeks, with a formal review at week four.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?

Many disc herniations improve significantly with spinal traction, manual therapy and a targeted rehabilitation program, avoiding the need for surgery.

What are the symptoms of disc herniation?

Common symptoms include lower back or neck pain, numbness, tingling, and pain radiating into the arms or legs.

Is spinal traction effective for disc herniation?

Yes, spinal traction decompresses the affected disc and nerve, reducing pain and supporting natural healing.
