Spinal Traction

Decompress vertebrae and nerves to relieve back, neck and disc-related pain.

Back to all services

Spinal traction applies a measured, sustained pull along the spine to widen the space between two vertebrae and take pressure off the disc and nerve root. Patients across Hurghada are referred to us for it when leg or arm symptoms are clearly coming from a compressed level rather than from muscle alone. The table is computer-controlled, so the force, angle and hold pattern are set to your body weight and to the segment being decompressed.

What a traction session looks like

You lie fully clothed on the motorised decompression table with a pelvic harness or cervical cradle fitted. The therapist enters the target level, then sets pull force as a percentage of body weight, along with hold and release intervals. Force is introduced in cycles rather than continuously, which the spine tolerates far better. Treatment time on the table is 15 to 20 minutes and you can stop it instantly with a hand switch. Afterwards we apply heat and gentle core activation before you stand up, since the segment is temporarily more mobile.

When traction is appropriate

  • Leg or arm pain following a clear nerve distribution
  • Symptoms that ease when you hang or lean forward on a support
  • Numbness or pins and needles below the knee or elbow
  • Back pain that intensifies with prolonged sitting or driving
  • Imaging showing disc bulge or narrowing at a specific level

What decompression offers

  • Force calculated to body weight rather than estimated
  • Targeted relief at the compressed level
  • Comfortable, passive treatment with a patient stop switch
  • Often reduces radiating symptoms before local back pain
  • Combines with core stability to hold the improvement

Session length and programme

Table time is 15 to 20 minutes within a 40-minute appointment. Courses generally run 8 to 12 sessions across three to four weeks, with a reassessment at the halfway point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is spinal traction uncomfortable?

Most patients describe it as a gentle stretch. Force is applied in cycles rather than continuously, it is calculated from your body weight, and you hold a stop switch throughout the session.

How long do I spend on the decompression table?

Table time is 15 to 20 minutes inside a 40-minute appointment, with heat and gentle core activation afterwards before you stand up.

Should I bring my MRI or X-ray report?

Yes, please bring any imaging you have. Knowing the affected level lets us set the pull angle and force for that segment rather than treating the spine generally.
