Dry Needling
Fine needles release muscular trigger points for fast relief of chronic tension.
Dry needling uses very fine filament needles to reach trigger points inside a muscle that hands cannot release through the overlying tissue. At our Al Kawther clinic in Hurghada it is used most often for deep gluteal, calf and shoulder-girdle points that reproduce a patient's familiar referred pain. The needle carries no substance; the therapeutic effect comes from the local twitch response and the drop in resting tone that follows.
The needling procedure
The therapist palpates the taut band and marks the point that reproduces your symptom. Skin is cleaned, and a sterile single-use needle is inserted through a guide tube; you may feel a brief cramp or twitch as the point releases. Two to six points are usually treated in one visit, and needles are either withdrawn immediately or left in place for several minutes depending on tissue irritability. The whole session takes about 30 minutes including the stretching and gentle activation work that follows, which is what keeps the muscle lengthened.
Indications for dry needling
- A tender knot that refers pain to a predictable area
- Deep muscle tension not reachable by massage
- Tension-type headaches arising from the neck musculature
- Persistent calf or gluteal tightness limiting stride
- Muscle guarding that keeps returning between sessions
Why patients choose needling
- Direct access to deep trigger points
- Noticeable drop in resting muscle tone after release
- Short appointment that fits between commitments
- Combines well with stretching and strength work
- Sterile single-use needles, disposed of after each point
Session length and course
Sessions take around 30 minutes. Two to four sessions at weekly intervals are typical, with mild post-needling soreness for up to 24 hours being common and self-limiting.

How is dry needling different from acupuncture?
Dry needling targets muscular trigger points based on Western medical principles to relieve pain and tension, rather than energy pathways.
